Visiting Rosia Bay

Situated at the opposite end of the “Rock” from Spain, Rosia Bay is an historic area, where it is said that Nelson’s body was brought after his death aboard HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. As well as the magnificent history surrounding Rosia Bay, it holds the distinction of being more than just a beach or a bay. It is a unique attraction in its own right, as a coastal area that is part of a port, as a tourist attraction, and it also acts as a source of local entertainment.

The Rosia Bay area is also home to some incredible fishing opportunities as both locals and tourists will attest. Whilst visiting Rosia Bay you will be guaranteed a relaxing day in which you can enjoy Gibraltarian culture! The locals say that one of the best aspects of Rosia Bay is the fact that parking is usually available which at times is hard to find in other areas of Gibraltar.

Whilst in Rosia Bay you will have a chance to visit the exact point in which Nelson was rested prior to being returned home to England. It is definitely much more than just history yet acts today as a bright welcoming area with lots of parking space available, great little shops and lots of wonderful things to do for entertainment! Whilst visiting Gibraltar a visit to Rosia Bay is strongly recommended as a place where  you will be able to see a slightly quieter aspect of the Gibraltarian  lifestyle.

Geocaching in Gibraltar!

Until a couple of days ago I had never heard of geocaching until my friend explained to me how people all around the world were taking part in this latest trend. I was still uncertain about what geocaching actually was yet after further research geocaching sounds like the perfect opportunity for an adventure with a twist!

Geocaching is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure! A geocacher can place a geocache anywhere in the world, and pinpoint its exact location using GPS technology and then go on to share the geocache´s existence and location online! The basic idea is to go outside and hide containers called geocaches and the coordinates of the location of the geocache is listed here. Geocaching is a great opportunity to explore locations near and far and with over a million geocaches hidden worldwide there is really is a geocache for any type of adventure.

Geocaches can be very cleverly hidden and when you actually find the geocache it is very rewarding! Upon finding the geocache you sign the log book within it  and take a surprise gift or message from the geocache and in turn leave something of equal or greater value in the geocache. There are over nine geocaches in different locations around Gibraltar meaning that you have a very high chance of finding a geocache on your adventure!

For more information on Geocaching in Gibraltar click here! After your special adventure why not visit Pizza Hut in Gibraltar´s Casemates in which you can enjoy an array of yummy foods at very modest prices!

Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group

The Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group (GDSG) understands the need for support of children who suffer from dyslexia and other similar disabilities. They are also aware of the fact that it is not only the children who may need support, but the parents and siblings of these children who are in need of help as well. At this moment in time there do not seem to be many groups dealing with the following, therefore GDSG has taken it on themselves to help and support children as much as they can without neglecting their main aims.

The Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group predominately deals with the specific learning difficultly of dyslexia. Dyslexia affects a person´s ability to deal with text, and often numbers as well. Dyslexia is estimated to occur in 10-20% of the population thus there is a demand for support groups such as the Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group. As each dyslexic person has a different combination of strengths and weaknesses the group aims to cater to the needs of each individual child.

One of the main issues is diagnosing whether your child is actually dyslexic. This process can be made easier by clicking here which will direct you to the Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group website which will help you understand the symptoms of dyslexia.

Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group always holds a bi-weekly homework club at the library at the John Mackintosh Hall in Gibraltar, where support can be given with homework.  The club runs for one hour starting at five o´clock. Why not pop along so your children can experience the benefits of this club themselves?

For more information on Gibraltar Dyslexia Support Group click here.

The History of Pizza

Many of you may expect that Pizza originates from Italy, yet this is not the case. Italy is famous for its Pizza, Pasta and Ice Cream, however surprisingly Italy were not the founders of the delicious delicacy of Pizza. The foundations for Pizza were originally laid by the early Greeks who first baked large, round and flat breads which they “anointed with oil, herbs, spices and Dates.”

Eventually the idea of flat bread found its way to Italy where, in the 18th century, the flat breads called “Pizzas”, were sold on the streets and in the markets. They were not topped with anything but were enjoyed au naturel. Since they were relatively cheap to make, were tasty and filling, they were sold to the poor all over Naples by street vendors. The acceptance of the tomato by the Neapolitans and the visit of a queen contributed to the Pizza as we know and enjoy it today.

Nowadays we celebrate Pizza! February 9th is International Pizza Day and the Guinness Book of Records states that the largest Pizza ever made and eaten was created in Havana, Florida and was 100 feet and 1 inch across!

American and Canadian citizens will eat an average 23 pounds of Pizza, per person, per year. Pepperoni and Cheese is the favourite combination, especially with the younger set, and is second only to the hamburger as this continent’s favourite food. Therefore why not visit Pizza Hut in Gibraltar which offers an array of yummy pizzas at very modest prices, offering fun for all!

Gibraltar on The One Show

BBC One’s topical weekday magazine programme The One Show featured Gibraltar on Tuesday evening, 1st March. Reporter and TV presenter Dan Snow filmed a report about Operation Tracer, a Second World War plan to place a group of military personnel as spies inside Gibraltar Rock.

The report contained footage of an interview with Dr Bruce Cooper, a Surgeon Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, who passed away in December 2010. He was the last surviving member of the heroic group who were part of the top-secret plan conceived at the end of the summer of 1941. In the event of Gibraltar being captured by German forces, Cooper and five other men would have been sealed into a secret man made chamber some 1,350ft above sea level, with enough supplies and a tap connected to a water reservoir. From two small slits in the walls of the cave they were expected to observe the activities of the Germans for a period of a year or more, and report shipping movements within the Straits of Gibraltar and around the harbour. The operation was called off only in August 1943, when it was clear that the threat to Gibraltar had passed. Iwas not until the discovery of the sophisticated secret complex by the Gibraltar Caving Group in 1997, when they noticed a draught coming from one of the tunnel walls, that the covert plan was able to be confirmed. Further searching led them to carefully break through a wall into chambers which had never been used and had remained sealed for over fifty years. The rooms were without doubt intended for use in Operation Tracer, and became affectionately known as “Stay Behind Cave”.  The floor of the main hall had been covered in cork tiles to reduce any noise and to provide some insulation and it was of sufficient dimensions to permit the men to exercise. In the years before he died Dr Bruce Cooper returned to Gibraltar and  was able to confirm that the chamber discovered in 1997 was indeed the secret chamber that he and his five companions would have occupied.
