The Mediterranean Steps create a beautiful and challenging yet exciting hike all! The Mediterranean Steps were created by the military several decades ago as part of a system of communication that would run between two defence points with in Gibraltar. There is still much evidence of a military presence throughout the trek; and you will see buildings and gun placements dating back to the Second World War. There are also some aspects of the steps that are prehistoric in nature as well as natural sites that also appear on the steps.
The Mediterranean Steps are located on the Eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar. The steps begin at an altitude of 180 metres and finishes at an altitude of 426 metres at O’Hara’s Battery which is the highest point on the Rock, where you will be surprised to find two 9.2 Inch guns. The steps are at times steep and often uneven and are actually a flight of stairs that have been cut from the limestone from the Rock of Gibraltar. The sheer height and breath taking views will leave you amazed; it is easy to see why so many choose to scale the heights of the Mediterranean Steps. You will also have a chance to see the stunning flora and fauna that Gibraltar has to offer on this hike!
There are several companies offering their services in guiding you around the Mediterranean steps. A popular company is Barbary Rock Adventures which offer a guided service of the Mediterranean Steps, whether you’re interested in the flora, fauna, or just getting to the top, their expert guides will take you around and give you the experience of a lifetime!

The Rock of Gibraltar is world famous so if you are visiting the area it would be a great shame not to spend a couple of hours exploring the Rock itself! Apart from the great beauty of the Rock and the stunning views of Gibraltar, the Costa del Sol and Africa which are visible from the top of the Rock, there is a vast amount of interesting history surrounding the Rock dating back to the year 711 A.D. In 711 A.D. Tarik Ibn Zeyad, a Berber leader of the Arab Governor of North Africa “Musa Ibn Nosseyer” landed at the Southern end of the Rock. The word Gibraltar is a derivative from the Arabic words “Jebel Tarik” which means Tariks Mountain, and so his memory lives on.
The Rock of Gibraltar is very easy to access and can be done so by taking the Cable Car to the top of the Rock, by taking part in a guided tour, or by venturing out yourself and exploring the Rock. To gain the most from your Gibraltar Rock experience a guided tour is advisable as you and your friends and family will be driven and escorted around the Rock and have the chance to see things that you would not necessarily have seen on your own.
For the ultimate Rock experience book a Gibraltar Rock Tour. The tours run regularly and are very modestly priced. The booking offices are situated at the Frontier and at the bottom of the Rock.Visiting the Rock of Gibraltar is a memorable experience that everyone will enjoy.

Going on a dolphin safari in Gibraltar offers you the perfect activity for a beautiful summer’s day. The Bay and Straits of Gibraltar with their large population of dolphins and whales are unique in being situated in a major tourist area accessible to most Western Europeans. The Straits of Gibraltar are one of the great natural land bridges of the world and are famous for the biannual migration of bird life. What is not so generally realised is that there is a continual passage of cetaceans passing between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic here.
As a result of the Straits being only 13 miles wide at its narrowest point, the concentration of cetaceans is very high, especially so towards the middle. It is about 3 miles offshore that you find the larger examples, such as the Sperm Whales. For some reason most sightings show that they are heading in a westerly direction. The prevailing surface current is easterly and these animals may be just stemming the current flow, and not in fact travelling out of the Straits at that particular time.
The Bay of Gibraltar seems to be a favourite place for nursery schools of Common Dolphins, and it is a very common sight to see baby dolphins accompanied by their mothers who always stay very close to them, rising to the surface a few inches away from each other when coming up to breathe. There are many companies within Gibraltar that offer dolphin and whale tours around the Bay and Straits which are very modestly priced and easy to find! The unique conditions of the Straits and the beautiful whales and dolphins that inhabit it should be taken advantage of, so if you are visiting Gibraltar it would be a great shame not to take a trip to see these wonderful creatures.

The most popular attraction in Gibraltar is probably Apes Den where you can visit the famous and cheeky apes that inhabit the Rock. This very popular attraction is definitely worth visiting with family and friends. The Barbary Macaques are the only native breed of monkey left in Europe and are a real pleasure to watch in their natural habitat.
The Barbary Macaques were formally cared for by the British Army and then the Gibraltar Regiment. They were fed and looked after by the Regiment, cared for in the Army Hospital, and all the animals were named after ranking officers or other associated people and were very well looked after! Nowadays the Barbary Macaques are cared for by the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society (GONHS). The monkeys are fed on a diet of fruit and vegetables and are given fresh water supplementing their main diet of leaves and other greenery. All the macaques are tattooed and micro chipped as well as photographed and catalogued to ensure their safety.
The Barbary Macaques, as with so much of Gibraltar, are linked to legends and are very important to the people of Gibraltar. During World War II the population of monkeys dwindled down to just 7 monkeys and Winston Churchill was so concerned he ordered the importation of others to boost the populations from across the strait in Africa!
There are many ways in which you can travel up to the Apes Den and you are allowed to get especially close. If you are sensible and don’t frighten or scare the monkeys, you can sit by and watch their antics while taking in the amazing view out across the beautiful bay. However you need to bear in mind whilst on your visit that the cheeky monkeys are notorious for trying to get into peoples’ bags and if you are carrying a plastic bag they are almost guaranteed to try to get it, and will likely succeed. Due to the high number of tourists that feed the monkeys (either voluntarily or not) their social structures and diets were being seriously affected, so it is now an offence to feed them and you can be fined up to £500.
Whilst visiting Gibraltar it would be a great shame if you did not visit Apes Den and the famous Barbary Macaques! After your visit you will probably be feeling slightly peckish, so why not head down to Gibraltar’s Casemates where you can purchase an array of yummy food for very modest prices at Pizza Hut!

There is an intriguing history behind the hugely successful global company that is known nowadays as Pizza Hut. Many of you may be surprised to learn that the first Pizza Hut restaurant was opened in 1958 in Kansas, America, when two brothers borrowed just $600 from their mother resulting in the birth of Pizza Hut which is now the world’s largest pizza franchise.
Pizza Hut has subsequently branched out and developed franchises all over the world. In fact it is diversity that has made the history of Pizza Hut so successful. Pizza Hut’s menus and recipes are not the same around the globe, with different locations having different suppliers and different toppings, according to the demand of their clients. The building block of the history of Pizza Hut has been this diversity, not often present in such a large concern.
Over the years Pizza Hut has become one of the world’s largest users of cheese, with one of their secret recipes being the Insider pizza which alone uses a pound of cheese! Over the course of a summer it is estimated that Pizza Hut uses a 100 million pounds of cheese. Pizza Hut uses more than 300 million pounds of cheese annually. That is a lot of cheese!
In 2010 Pizza Hut made history when they were the first national pizza franchise to allow their customers to order pizzas online in Spanish, and in 2001 Pizza Hut sponsored a pizza delivery to the international space station! Pizza Hut really does have a very fascinating history, and who knows what the history of Pizza Hut will look like in a hundred years’ time?
